Mark 11:12 - 14 Now the next day, when they had come
out from Bethany, He was hungry.
And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would
find something on it. And when He came to
it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not
the season for figs.
In response Jesus said to it, "Let no one
eat fruit from you ever again." And His
disciples heard it.
Matthew 7:16 You will know them by their fruits.
"Leaves, but no figs" or the gifts of the Spirit and no fruit of the Spirit. Remember, the gifts are irrevocable [Romans 11:29].
"Fruit needs to be present in season and out of season". This is why taking up His cross is essential and why the Classical Christian foundation must be present in our lives. Without this foundation, the fruit will be bad.
Fruit is clearly seen in close relationships; difficult to see from afar. The Sermon on the Mount emphasises the close inner character and the importance of good fruit.
Discernment needs to be according to the fruit and not according to the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The latter rain of the Holy Spirit at the end of the church age must produce an abundance of good fruit as well as bringing in the manifestations of His Presence and glory.
